Special: Top 10 DC Comics Christmas Stories

Who doesn't love a good Christmas story? Luckily the fine folks over at DC Comics have produced a stunningly amazing amount that it was hard to narrow down to just ten but I'll do my best!

10. Silent Night, Deadly Night

From: Batman #239 (1971)

Starring: Batman

Story: Batman follows up on a number of robberies that have plagued a number of Gotham City Santa's. Turns out the culprit is a man that was recently laid off from a toy company that wants to give his niece a Merry Christmas, upon hearing this Batman tells him he was still wrong to do it but he escapes to take revenge on his former boss, an old guy in a wheelchair. Batman arrives too late as the man beats his former boss within an inch of his life before he realizes what he's doing is wrong... Somehow Batman still lets him go saying they'll worry about his legal troubles next week and that he's already given him a present by not killing the man... Let that sink in. What the hell were you thinking Batman??

9. Superman's Christmas Adventure

From: Superman's Christmas Adventure #1 (1940)

Starring: Superman

Story: In this story Clark Kent and Lois Lane spot a spoiled entitled rich kid while out Christmas shopping so that night Superman decides to kidnap the child and go all "A Christmas Carol" on him showing all the poor kids and how they go without even a broken toy. While that's happening two guys decide to ambush Santa to make him change his ways, after he doesn't and has the elves beat them up they turn their sights on Lois! So naturally Santa and Superman team up to take them down and save Lois from being shot into space or something? Man this is weird, but in a good way. This book was also given away at Department stores... Oh and there are a butt ton of Superman toys advertisements... Like in the comic itself, not ad pages so that makes sense.

8. The TT's Swinging Christmas Carol

From: Teen Titans #13 (1967)

Starring: Robin (Dick Grayson), Kid Flash (Wally West), Aqualad (Garth), Wonder Girl (Donna Troy)

Story: Yet another Christmas Carol-esque story from DC, this time starring the original Teen Titans! Here the titans learn of a nefarious plot by a Mr. Scrounge in which he is buying fancy European cars and importing them as scrap metal before rebuilding them as fancy cars at his junkyard. What a meanace! How dare he not pay duty on his overseas purchases. So as it turns out the Titans decide to "haunt" him to teach him a lesson and everything is going swimmingly until his goons shoot down Wonder Girl in the third act. The Titans put up a fight but end of getting captured. Luckily Scrounge already learned his lesson and lets the Titans go... It's a Christmas miracle!

7. Metropolis Mailbag

From: Superman #64 (1991)

Starring: Superman

Story: In this touching tale Superman shares with Lois a Christmas tradition of his, reading kids letters to him. Their basically like letters to Santa but instead to the world's strongest man. Anyways one of those letters are from a young fan that asks Superman to save his Dad's life as he's got a brain tumor. Superman goes to tell the boy that he can't in fact fix that but it's too late. The boy's father already passed away. But it's not all doom and gloom in this issue. No Superman also reunites a long thought deceased WWII survivor with her sister and thanks to a Daily Planet strike a lot of kids won't get Christmas presents but Superman gets some cash from Bruce Wayne and carries around a sleigh to deliver presents with reindeer from the zoo and a fake Santa.

6. The Silent Night of The Batman

From: Batman #219 (1969)

Starring: Batman

Story: Look at that beautiful Christmas-y cover! Oh wait... This looks nothing like Christmas... Okay so this tale from Batman #219 amounts to nothing more than a back-up story and a really weird one at that... But weird in a good way! So basically it's Christmas Eve and Batman is making his patrol rounds when the bat signal comes on. He goes to visit the Commissioner who tells him he shone the bat signal to tell him to take the night off because everyone is in the Christmas Spirit. Batman scoffs but relents and spends the night singing Christmas Carols with the GCPD meanwhile citizens stop short of committing crimes or in some cases killing themselves because they think they see Batman... But nope! He's singing.

5. Be Good For Goodness' Sake

From: Justice Society of America #55 (2003)

Starring: The Flash (Jay Garrick), Alan Scott (Former Green Lantern, known as The Sentinel here), Wildcat (Ted Grant), Hawkman.

Story: The JSA are on a mission in a small New Hampshire town which leads them to meeting the local mall Santa when some goons come in to rob the place and take some hostages while they are at it. The JSA team captures most of them but one is about to get away when the Mall Santa doing their best Paul Blart impersonation says "not in my mall" and cold clocks him after he pulls a knife cutting off their Santa beard revealing Santa's real identity as Ma Hunkle, the original Red Tornado! Turns out she faked her death to go into Witness Protection... Oh comic books. You so crazy.

4. Should Auld Acquaintance Be Forgot

From: Christmas With The Superheroes #2 (1988)

Starring: Deadman

Story: Here's one of the most popular, if not most popular DC story that fills you with the yuletide spirit. We get a glimpse on how Deadman spends the holidays. Mostly finding Scrooge-type characters and making them give back to the people they mistreated over the last year. He also makes time for self pity after taking control of a few meat sacks to know what spending time with loved ones over the holidays feels like... But of course that's wrong of him to steal other peoples joy. It's then he meets a girl that can actually see him. She tells him all about the reason for the season, essentially be good for the sake of being good. Don't do the right thing because you'll get something out of it, do it because you know you should. Thus Deadman doesn't need to go all "A Wonderful Life" on us.

3. One Perfect Gift

From: The Flash #73 (1992)

Starring: The Flash (Wally West), The Flash (Jay Garrick), The Flash (Barry Allen)

Story: Look at that cast! Haha. Mark Waid finally cracks our list with this story from The Flash. Wally (the current Flash at the time) and old man Jay Garrick are having a little Christmas get together when they leave on patrol, mostly to get Wally out of the house. They come across a pregnant lady in labour who was struggling to get to her husband who works at a department store but was going to help rob it since he was being laid off that night (Christmas Eve). Wally goes to stop the husband from making a grave mistake and Jay stands back and delivers doctors, nurses and equipment to the street to help the woman in labour. At the end of the issue a knock at the door is greeted by the face of the man in red... But it's not Santa Claus... It's Barry Allen! What a twist to cap off this festive issue (Barry had died 8 years prior and hadn't been seen since).

2. Yes Tyrone, There Is A Santa Claus

From: Infinite Holiday Special #1 (2006)

Starring: Batman, Superman

Story: Okay so this is a very short, but oh so sweet tale. A young boy named Tyrone writes to the Daily Planet to find out if there is a real Santa or not, once Clark reads it he knows he needs to show him that anything is possible so he dresses up in a Superman Santa Suit and flies over with a sleigh full of gifts. When he arrives Batman is there to talk him out of it, he tells him he's a hero and needs to act like it... Afterall what would people think if he can take a night off from saving the world to play dress up with some kid. Superman takes his advice and changes but decides Tyrone should still get some presents but when he returns he finds Tyrone stricken by "Bat-Santa" that came to give him presents. Batman sees Superman and gives him a wink. The issue closes with Superman decking Batman and we get the "elseworlds" stamp indicating that this is a non-cannon story, but cannon or not it was a fun ride.

1. Merry Christmas, Justice League - Now Die!

From: Justice League of America #60 (2001)

Starring: Plastic Man, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern (Kyle Rayner), Batman, Aquaman, Martian Manhunter, The Flash (Wally West)

Story: Mark Waid makes his second appearance in the Top 3!? This time at the top spot. While visiting friends Plastic Man tells an unbelieving boy that Santa Claus is not only real but a member of the Justice League! The evil Neron gives kids presents before Christmas, which of course they accept, only to find out they come with a dark twist. Santa and the JLA go to help but the JLA are turned to coal so it comes down to Santa who beats the hell out of Neron's evil elfs and demons before finally succumbing. But Santa had a trick up his sleeve, knowing Neron needs to trade and bargain he gives him a gift and refuses anything in return.. So when he opens his parcel of socks and underwear he explodes! Santa then turns the JLA back to their normal self and accepts an invite to join the league.

Special: Re-Ranking The Best Movies of 2011 - 2014

Alright so first off let's announce the winner of our "What TV Show Should I Watch Next?" poll. Congratulations goes out to The Flash. Sorry The Walking Dead, better luck next March. This was supposed to be Batman and Robin Eternal's final checking in but I haven't had time to grab the last 2 issues so that'll be next Sunday (hopefully). This week I'm going to rank the top films of each year from 2011 - 2014 I recently updated the lists HERE however I just plug the new films I've watched in I don't rework the whole list, so let's look at where I'd set each year's top 10 today.

2011

Top 10 Then:

10. Moneyball
9. Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol
8. Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil
7. The Smurfs
6. Fright Night
5. Rango
4. Scream 4
3. X-Men: First Class
2. 30 Minutes Or Less
1. The Muppets

Top 10 Now:

10. Fright Night (6.)
9. 50/50  (15.)
8. Horrible Bosses (20.)
7. Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol (9.)
6. Warrior (14.)
5. Scream 4 (4.)
4. Moneyball (10.)
3. X-Men: First Class (3.)
2. Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil (8.)
1. The Muppets (1.)

Reasoning: Not much to talk about here, The Smurfs, Rango and 30 Minutes Or Less got bumped. The Smurfs didn't age well and Rango was actually the last film eliminated (likely would be 11.) as for 30 Minutes Or Less I still quite enjoy it but it's reason from falling from 2. to outside the top 10 is simply that Horrible Bosses overtook it as the funniest movie of the year.

2012

Top 10 Then:

10. Lawless
9. Dredd
8. Men In Black 3
7. The Amazing Spider-Man
6. Red Dawn
5. Wreck-It Ralph
4. The Hunger Games
3. Underworld: Awakening
2. The Avengers
1. The Dark Knight Rises

Top 10 Now:

10. Red Dawn (6.)
9. Argo (12.)
8. The Cabin In The Woods (11.)
7. Underworld: Awakening (3.)
6. 21 Jump Street (15.)
5. Wreck-It Ralph (5.)
4. The Hunger Games (4.)
3. Dredd (9.)
2. The Avengers (2.)
1. The Dark Knight Rises (1.)

Reasoning: If you thought 2011 had little explanation, this one takes the cake. Really the only thing that really changed was Dredd got better and better with each viewing causing it to sky rocket. The films eliminated (The Amazing Spider-Man, Men In Black 3, Lawless) would all rank in spots 11 through 15 so none of them really got worse but the movies taking their spots looked better with increased views.

2013

Top 10 Then:

10. A Good Day To Die Hard
9. Insidious Chapter 2
8. The Hangover Part III
7. Now You See Me
6. Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues
5. Percy Jackson: The Sea Of Monsters
4. Despicable Me 2
3. Iron Man 3
2. Evil Dead
1. Man Of Steel

Top 10 Now:

10. The Hangover Part III (8.)
9. The Wolverine (14.)
8. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (11.)
7. Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues (6.)
6. Percy Jackson: Sea Of Monsters (5.)
5. Now You See Me (7.)
4. Iron Man 3 (3.)
3. Despicable Me 2 (4.)
2. Evil Dead (2.)
1. Man Of Steel (1.)

Reasoning: I had a great case to put Fruitvale Station in the number 9 spot bumping the others down one but The Wolverine held up better upon a second viewing and I couldn't quite bring myself to bump The Hangover out of the top 10 like Insidious Chapter 2 and A Good Day To Die Hard who both are likely within that 11 - 15 range, maybe just outside in the case of Die Hard.

2014

Top 10 Then:

10. Maleficent
9. The Amazing Spider-Man 2
8. Turtle Power: The Definitive History Of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
7. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1
6. Batman: Assault On Arkham
5. Non-Stop
4. X-Men: Days Of Future Past
3. Veronica Mars
2. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
1. How To Train Your Dragon 2

Top 10 Now:

10. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 (7.)
9. The Purge Anarchy (11.)
8. Batman: Assault On Arkham (6.)
7. Maleficent (10.)
6. Non-Stop (5.)
5. Veronica Mars (3.)
4. Big Hero 6 (12.)
3. X-Men Days Of Future Past (4.)
2. Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2.)
1. How To Train Your Dragon 2 (1.)

Reasoning: This was a tough one. I could make an argument that the top 4 could've been number 1 in 2013. The only big mover is Big Hero 6 which had a late 2014 release which made it only viewable once before publishing. The movies eliminated (Spider-man 2 and the Turtle Documentary) don't have much rewatchability but are still good nonetheless and deserving of spots near the top of this list.

Special: What TV Show Should I Watch Next: Finals!

Well it's the last Sunday in March which means we've hit the finals and for the second time this poll we had a very close decision, the heavyweight showdown between Arrow and The Walking Dead was decided by a single vote and it was the zombies taking down the protector of Star City. Meanwhile in the other semi-final match-up the scarlet speedster easily dispatched of the cinderella story The LEague making this the first time in this poll's history we have a comic book showdown in the finals. Anyways the bracket is below and the poll under that. Next week on this very post I'll announce the winner. Vote away my friends!

Special: What TV Show Should I Watch Next: Semi-Finals

Well no surprises here. We're down to the final four and I must say I'm not surprised about our finalists, despite the presumed winner, in my book anyway, being ousted. We have a heavy-weight comic book showdown and a classic David vs. Goliath match up but first let's look at the bracket.

Special: What TV Show Should I Watch Next: Quarter-Finals

Well, well I must say I'm surprised. Not only did The Flash completely obliterate perennial contender New Girl but Brooklyn Nine-Nine, after being eliminated in the first round the last 2 years, upset Breaking Bad by a single vote... So Breaking Bad fans that didn't vote, this ones on you. Nothing else was really interesting except the fact Arrow shutout Breaking In by a whopping 15 votes to 0. Let's hope the 2nd round brings more exciting matchups. Here's the way the bracket currently shakes out.

What TV Show Should I Watch Next: Round One

Well here we are another March another time for March Madness TV Show style...  I've listed the shows below that I've already watched all the way through recently and the ones in bold are ongoing.

My Name Is Earl
Scrubs
Pushing Daisies
Reaper
Megaman: NT Warrior
Comic Book Men
The Big Bang Theory
Veronica Mars
Gotham
8 Simple Rules
The Killing
2 Broke Girls
The Muppets
What I Like About You
Supernatural
Pokemon
Digimon
Whose Line Is It Anyways?
Daredevil
A.K.A. Jessica Jones
Silicon Valley

Since last year we had a whopping 32 shows (5 Sunday's in 2015) to narrow it down to 16 I eliminated the shows I started watching, last year's winner Supernatural and Whose Line Is It Anyway?, as well as the animated shows since I have enough of those ongoing already. I automatically put every show that made it to the 2nd round last year and just picked out my favourites that were eliminated in the first round. So here is the bracket:

Some interesting battles include a re-match from last year's first round match that saw New Girl upset The Flash and The League versus The Fringe which highlights 2 shows that can never seem to make it too far despite being in the poll both years.

My prediction: Breaking Bad has made it to the final 4 in both years, both times losing to eventual winners 2 Broke Girls (2014 Semis) and Supernatural (2015 Finals) so something's gotta give soon. But it's in a stacked bracket as it'll have to get through both Arrow (who it beat in the semis last year) and The Walking Dead which has consistently underachieved in this poll. I'm betting it ends up in the finals though. Who it ends up against, the favourite has to be New Girl as it has been bounced in the semis both years (2014 to Arrow, 2015 to Supernatural). The toughest match up may be the first round against The Flash who it beat last year but since then has gotten a bigger following, in any event I expect the winner of that first round match to make it to the finals with Dexter being the only real dark horse but the further we get from it's conclusion the more unlikely it is to be a serious threat.

Special: The Flash Volume 1: Move Forward Review

Hello kids and welcome back to your regular scheduled Sunday Special where I talk about whatever I feel like really, and this week to celebrate Easter we're going to review The Flash Volume 1: Move Forward. What this has to do with Easter I do not know but in any event it's happening... But first I'm sure you want to know how the bracket turned out.

So congratulations to Supernatural for winning this 2nd annual event, as for the rest of the entrants there is always next year... Onto The Flash!

Move Forward was The New 52 relaunch of The Flash in September 2011 and it quickly (heh) gained traction as one of The New 52 bright spots alongside titles like Batman, Swamp Thing, Batwoman and Aquaman. Move Forward starts off supposedly 5 years after Barry Allen became The Flash and all is going well as he's out on a date with his co-worker Patty when trouble happens. Quickly The Flash jumps into action and takes on this apparent military-esque unit and retrieves a portable genome re-coder and return it to it's rightful owner Dr. Elias. Though during the retrieval he sent one of the military men through a plate glass window and turns out he died.

When Barry gets to the scene of the accident there are questions as to whether or not The Flash was responsible for his death or if it was something else entirely, more shocking is the deceased is one of Barry's oldest friends, Manuel Lago. The plot thickens when later on Manuel appears at Barry's apartment and the two get chased by the same military folk as before. Barry of course checks out and The Flash enters the fray and that's when things get weird. Turns out the military folk that have captured Manuel by this point are Manuel... Every single one of them.

The Flash is subdued and The Manuel who call themselves Mob Rule grabbed Manuel and ran. With the help of Iris West, a reporter friend of Barry's, Barry is able to start piecing the puzzle together. Turns out Manuel was an army experiment and was given regeneration cell's. Unfortunately Manuel was captured and tortured repeatedly. They cut off all his limbs only to see them grow back, so they kept him there for weeks repeatedly cutting off hands and feet. After a while, the severed limbs regenerated themselves and become clones of Manuel, thus allowing Manuel to escape his torturers.

The only problem with these clones was they had a set life cycle, after a while they just expire. That's why Mob Rule wants him back they need to run tests on his genetic code to find out how to get his code into their bodies. There's also another problem The Flash has to deal with, there's a blackout throughout the Gem Cities so he's torn between helping his friend, doing his police duty and helping out during the blackout as the citizens have gone mad and finding out what's happening with the speed force since he's started using the speed force in his brain odd things have been happening.

With the help of Dr. Elias he realises that the more he uses the speed force the more likely he is to rip apart time and space as we know it and create worm holes. We also discover that this was the source of the blackout, not Mob Rule. Eventually Mob Rule enlist the help of Dr. Elias to allow them to survive and The Flash is upset to find this out but he must do what he can to help his friend.

Following the Mob Rule arc the rest of this book is filled out with three chapters that are not stand-alone and do not conclude themselves making this an odd way to break-up the story. First off we see Captain Cold trying to kill The Flash, it turns out that Cold's sister was sick in the hospital when the blackout came and she was unable to get the medical attention she needed without power and was likely going to die at any time. During his fight with Cold the boat his girlfriend Patty and his friend Iris was on split in half and Barry is getting dangerously close to hitting critical mass on the speed force which would open up a worm hole. After saving Patty and others from their side of the ship, which was falling, a wormhole opened up over the other side of the boat and Iris and others were sucked in the wormhole.

The Flash meets back up with Dr. Elias who gives him a giant treadmill he can use to expel the speed force that is at critical mass, best of all the power generated can be used to get the city back online. The Flash neglected to tell the Dr. however that his plan was to open up another wormhole and run through it in order to find Iris and the others and save them but upon making it through the wormhole he's met by Turbine, a WWII fighter pilot who has been stuck in the wormhole, which is really the inside of the speed force FYI. Turbine wants to go home and will fight The Flash every step of the way if he refuses to take him back to 1944.

Writers Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato craft an intriguing story that although can be predictable at times, moves in a nice steady manner throughout. Although I had complaints about the collection of the book it was more that it ended abruptly and was collected badly than the fat the story didn't read well. If I had volume 2 in hand I'm sure this wouldn't be a problem but I don't so it's problematic. For example there are nods to Gorilla Grodd's origins but only a couple pages, by looking at the collection titles looks like we won't really see Grodd until volume 3 so why bother?

By far the best thing about this book though was Manapul's art. It's perfect from the layouts to the character designs to the panelling. What this book did more than anything was get me excited to get to the Detective Comics run that Manapul and Buccellato were on. DC was so impressed with their run on The Flash they gave them their flagship title. If that doesn't say enough about this Flash run, I don't know what will.

Score: 8 Speed rings out of 10
