Special: First Listen Thoughts: Silverstein "A Beautiful Place To Drown", Mest "Masquerade", Mike Herrera "Moments Like These: Texas"

Silverstein - A Beautiful Place To Drown

Label: UNFD

Press Release: Silverstein are already set to celebrate their 20th anniversary with a massive tour, and the band have now announced that their ninth studio album will also see release this year. Titled A Beautiful Place to Drown, the Ontario outfit's latest arrives March 6 through NSEW Recordings/ UNFD.

My thoughts:This album is going to be unfairly characterized for going "soft" as the screams are definitely more absent than we've seen on past Silverstein releases. However on most songs the guitars remain heavy and melodic, a staple of Silverstein's music to this point, and after 9 albums I don't blame them for wanting to try something new. The only song I think will take some time to come around on is All Of Me but there are some absolute gems buried on this album (Say Yes! and Stop specifically) that are worthy of your time.

Mest - Masquerade

Label: Self-Released (Kickstarter)

Press Release: Legendary Chicago pop punk band Mest just released their brand new album 'Masquerade.' Not only that this is their first album after 2013's 'Not What You Expected,' but also the first one with the band's classic lineup since 2005' 'Photographs.'

My thoughts: As mentioned above the original band broke up after 2005 Photographs which had a much darker tone than the rest of their albums and although I expected them to go back to their lighter pop punk roots that was not the case. The title-track is fine and kicks things off but then it goes into a lull of darkness until the punk-rock sensibilities kick in on The Upside Down and Running Away. These Streets follows and is the best and most interesting song. The following two tracks are strong to end the album. It's just unfortunate that this iffy full length could've been a great EP if they cut out songs 2 - 7.

Mike Herrera - Moments Like These: Texas

Label: Self-Released

Press Release: Mike Herrera has released an acoustic solo record, Moments Like These: Texas. The record was recorded in the fall of 2019 over a series of solo shows. Moments is currently on all streaming platforms. A 10-inch vinyl version is also available direct from MxPx.com.

My thoughts: Although I would've preferred a more career spanning tracklist as they were at their height in the 90's and early 2000's but we only got 2 tracks of 9 that came out prior to 2003. That being said I enjoyed that a lot of these songs were upbeat tracks as I find it boring when artists simply take already acoustic sounding songs and strip them back further. We also got 1 Tumbledown song on the 10 song tracklisting to go with the 9 MxPx tracks but unfortunately I'm not a fan of that particular song (Son Of A Gun) despite liking the majority of  Tumbledown's music.
