Special: Blair Witch/Snowden/Whiskey Tango Foxtrot Mini-Reviews

Blair Witch

Synopsis: A group of college students venture into the Black Hills Forest in Maryland to uncover the mysteries surrounding the disappearance of James' sister who many believe is connected to the legend of the Blair Witch. At first the group is hopeful, especially when a pair of locals offer to act as guides through the dark and winding woods, but as the endless night wears on, the group is visited by a menacing presence. Slowly, they begin to realize the legend is all too real and more sinister than they could have imagined.

My thoughts: It wasn't scary, it utilizes all of maybe 2 or 3 jump scares. You can hardly see what's going on with the shaky cam and even when you can see it's not at all interesting... But hey if sticks scare the shit out of you, this movie will have you running out of the theater screaming.

Final verdict: 1 "scary" stick out of 5.

Snowden

Synopsis: Academy Award winning director Oliver Stone, tackles the most important and fascinating true story of the 21st century. Snowden, the politically-charged, pulse-pounding thriller starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Shailene Woodley, reveals the incredible untold personal story of Edward Snowden, the polarizing figure who exposed shocking illegal surveillance activities by the NSA and became one of the most wanted men in the world. He is considered a hero by some, and a traitor by others. No matter which you believe, the epic story of why he did it, who he left behind, and how he pulled it off makes for one of the most compelling films of the year.

My thoughts: It was interesting and entertaining but there was a sort of laziness done to the final product, but I mean that's kind of been Stone's M.O. for the last decade plus. It's certainly a step in the right direction for the longtime director though.

Final verdict: 3 (nearly 4) rubix cubes out of 5.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot

Synopsis: SNL alumni Tina Fey steps into the well worn shoes of journalist Kim Barker in Paramount Pictures' adaptation of Barker's memoir The Taliban Shuffle: Strange Days in Afghanistan and Pakistan, which details her years as a reporter in Pakistan and Afghanistan beginning in 2002.

My thoughts: Fey, Robbie and Freeman are all likable, though not much else is great in this film. It had a couple laughs but I think the premise of doing a romantic comedy in a war torn country with war going on using privileged white characters makes it hard to care about what's going on in their lives with this massive world-scaled problem being in the background.

Final verdict: 3 creepy Alfred Molina's out of 5.

Special: Pride And Prejudice And Zombies/Sausage Party/Digimon Adventure Tri: Chapter 1: Reunion Mini-Reviews

Pride And Prejudice And Zombies

Synopsis: A zombie outbreak has fallen upon the land in Jane Austen's classic tale of the tangled relationships between lovers from different social classes in 19th century England. Feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet (Lily James) is a master of martial arts and weaponry and the handsome Mr. Darcy (Sam Reilly) is a fierce zombie killer, yet the epitome of upper class prejudice. As the zombie outbreak intensifies, they must swallow their pride and join forces on the blood-soaked battlefield.

My thoughts: The cast is solid and likable. The cinematography is brilliantly presented and the deadpan humour provides it's share of laughs. Where does PPZ fail? All other aspects, the action was improperly paced and usually muddled up by trying to be too true to the Jane Austen source material. The direction was all over the place (as alluded to in the action scenes) but overall the movie was worth a watch despite it's hit and miss moments.

Final verdict: 3 warrior sisters out of 5.

Sausage Party

Synopsis: A misplaced sausage and his savory friends embark on an existential adventure through the aisles of a massive supermarket in this raunchy animated comedy from Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. As the store's annual 4th of July sale draws near, the perishable pals must return to their rightful places on the shelves before the customers come flooding in to fill their carts.

My thoughts: I really wanted to like this movie more... The animation did not impress me, though I knew that from the trailer. The cast is a who's who of comedy that generally does well, but there are some missteps... Mostly Wiig (Sorry Kristen). The humour relied on shock value, however in this day and age very little still shocks. It still had some funny moments though I kinda wish they avoided it all together since the story was very clever and enjoyable.

Final verdict: 3 food orgies out of 5.

Digimon Adventure Tri: Chapter 1: Reunion

Synopsis: It's been six years since the summer adventure when Tai (now in high school) and the rest of the DigiDestined crossed over to the Digital World and nearly three years since frenzied final battles between warring factions. With the gate to the Digital World closed, time continues to pass, until the adventure Digivolves once again.

My thoughts: What a great shot of nostalgia this film was. Seeing the original digi-destined together with their digimon pals was a great way to celebrate the shows 15th anniversary. However it clearly wasn't made for western audiences and some minor tweaks could've "Americanized it". I'm not suggesting whitewashing it, more subtle changes like turning the J-Pop soundtrack down a few ticks so you can hear the dialogue. The set-up was also a little long in the tooth but I'll withhold judgment on that until we see the following 2 chapters.

Final verdict: 4 digivolutions out of 5.

Special: Green Room/The Secret Life Of Pets/Bad Moms Mini-Reviews

Green Room:

Synopsis: Down on their luck punk rockers The Ain't Rights are finishing up a long and unsuccessful tour, and are about to call it quits when they get an unexpected booking at an isolated, run-down club deep in the backwoods of Oregon. What seems merely to be a third-rate gig escalates into something much more sinister when they witness an act of violence backstage that they weren't meant to see. Now trapped backstage, they must face off against the club's depraved owner, Darcy Banker (Patrick Stewart), a man who will do anything to protect the secrets of his nefarious enterprise. But while Darcy and his henchmen think the band will be easy to get rid of, The Ain't Rights prove themselves much more cunning and capable than anyone expected, turning the tables on their unsuspecting captors and setting the stage for the ultimate life-or-death showdown.

My thoughts: Dark, thrilling, bone chilling, edge of your seat excitement. The cast was stellar, Patrick Stewart is scary as hell and Anton Yelchin is amazing once again (R.I.P.). The only thing that held this back was it's dependence on gore, which I admittedly am not a fan of. Near perfect flick otherwise.

Final verdict: 4 box cutters out of 5.

The Secret Life Of Pets:

Synopsis: For their fifth fully-animated feature-film collaboration, Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures present The Secret Life of Pets, a comedy about the lives our pets lead after we leave for work or school each day. Comedy superstars Louis C.K., Eric Stonestreet and Kevin Hart make their animated feature-film debuts in The Secret Life of Pets, which co-stars Ellie Kemper, Lake Bell, Jenny Slate, Bobby Moynihan, Hannibal Buress and Albert Brooks.

My thoughts: In a year filled with animated hits The Secret Life of Pets may end up ultimately getting forgotten but it provides a lot of laughter and a lot of heart, something most non-Disney-related films can't pull off. The Secret Life of Pets deserves a better fate but at least Illumination can hang their hats on finally creating an original film on par with heir first, Despicable Me.

Final verdict: 4 destroyed collars out of 5.

Bad Moms:

Synopsis:In this new comedy from the grateful husbands and devoted fathers who wrote The Hangover, Amy has a seemingly perfect life--a great marriage, over-achieving kids, beautiful home and a career. However she's over-worked, over-committed and exhausted to the point that she's about to snap. Fed up, she joins forces with two other over-stressed moms on a quest to liberate themselves from conventional responsibilities--going on a wild, un-mom-like binge of long overdue freedom, fun and self-indulgence--putting them on a collision course with PTA Queen Bee Gwendolyn and her clique of devoted perfect moms.

My thoughts: Not as bad as I expected, though it was an incredibly cliched and predictable script, the cast was just strong enough to make you forget about that. It had a few laughs but obviously being a childless male I'm likely not it's target audience. But fellas, if your lady really wants to see this, you will be able to easily survive it.

Final verdict: 3 donut holes out of 5.
