Special: Halloween Kills, Muppets: Haunted Mansion, Werewolves Within Mini-Reviews

Halloween Kills

Synopsis: Minutes after Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis), her daughter Karen (Judy Greer) and granddaughter Allyson (Andi Matichak) left masked monster Michael Myers caged and burning in Laurie's basement, Laurie is rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, believing she finally killed her lifelong tormentor. But when Michael manages to free himself from Laurie's trap, his ritual bloodbath resumes. As Laurie fights her pain and prepares to defend herself against him, she inspires all of Haddonfield to rise up against their unstoppable monster. The Strode women join a group of other survivors of Michael's first rampage who decide to take matters into their own hands, forming a vigilante mob that sets out to hunt Michael down, once and for all. Evil dies tonight.

My thoughts: The previous installment breathed a lot of new air into this long struggling project, though I will admit I liked the Rob Zombie Halloween but just like that movie I was disappointed by the follow-up but unlike that one I didn't completely despise Halloween Kills, it simply didn't move the needle forward as much as I would've liked. Of course a sequel is already in the works so let's just hope this is the issue of a prolonged second act to get us to a worthwhile finale in it's own film.

Final verdict: 3.5 Shatner masks out of 5.

Muppets: Haunted Mansion

Synopsis: The Great Gonzo – world famous daredevil artiste, has done it all, seen it all, and survived it all. But on Halloween night, the fearless Gonzo takes on the greatest challenge of his life by spending one very daring night in the most grim grinning place on Earth …The Haunted Mansion.

My thoughts: This Muppets special won't gain many new Muppets fans. It's simply a situation where if you like the not quite a mop, not quite a puppet characters, you'll like this. Will Arnett and Taraji P. Henson seem to be having a blast making this which does show and Haunted Mansion gives us all the heart and soul we expect from a Muppets production. They've been a little hit and miss recently and this isn't a hit like past Muppets movies you fondly remember but not the misses like you recall as well. It's comfortable in the middle but given the track record of late you'll take that.

Final verdict: 3.5 Disney rides out of 5.

Werewolves Within

Synopsis: After a proposed pipeline creates divisions within the small town of Beaverfield, and a snowstorm traps its residents together inside the local inn, newly arrived forest ranger FINN (Sam Richardson) and postal worker CECILY (Milana Vayntrub) must try to keep the peace and uncover the truth behind a mysterious creature that has begun terrorizing the community.

My thoughts: Based off a VR game, which is based off a card game that I like, Werewolves Within, had a good set up and the movie kept you guessing. I felt like they focused a bit too much on the comedy element and not enough on the horror element unfortunately. But that was really the only downside as I felt this cast of relative unknows did well and the visual effects weren't too bad given the budget the filmmakers were working with.

Final verdict: 3.5 twists out of 5.

Special: First Listen Thoughts: Ice Nine Kills "The Silver Scream 2: Welcome To Horrorwood", Grayscale "Umbra", rationale. "If The Problem Persists"

Ice Nine Kills - The Silver Scream 2: Welcome To Horrorwood

Label: Fearless Records

Press release: At a totally sold-out fan event at the Mystic Museum in North Hollywood, CA, horror metal titans, Ice Nine Kills announced their long awaited sequel The Silver Scream 2: Welcome To Horrorwood. The fresh slice of horror-themed brutality will be released via Fearless Records on Friday, October 15 and can be pre-saved here. Speaking on his band’s newly announced album, Ice Nine Kills frontman and driving creative force, Spencer Charnas shared: “True to horror franchise tradition, there is always a sequel…”Welcome To Horrorwood” follows in the bloody footsteps of its predecessor, paying tribute to 13 more of the most gruesome tales to ever grace the silver screen. In this latest INK offering, the last album and video series is portrayed as a work of fiction. The new story line thrusts the band into a brutal “real world” slaying. The only traces of the crime are 13 songs left behind by the suspected killer…

My thoughts: People are losing their minds over this record. I'm sitting here thinking did I miss something? It's predecessor was much better in my opinion. Horrorwood does still have some strong moments but the pop song structure that made these songs based on movies so strong is seemingly lost here. Maybe it was as a result of constructing an overall narrative that was not found on the earlier records, or maybe Spencer and co. just wanted to push a louder sound that was sprinkled in on TSS to be the overarching sound on this record. I'm still excited to see where the videos go from here, especially since they've already covered some of my least favourite songs (Assault & Batteries, Funeral Derangements) so now we can see what they do with some of my favourites after one listen (Ex-Mortis, The Shower Scene).

Grayscale - Umbra

Label: Fearless Records

Press release: Philadelphia's alt rock band Grayscale are pleased to announce third full-length Umbra. The album finds the band not reborn but refined and truly coming into their sound. Umbra arrives on August 27 on Fearless Records. For Grayscale, Umbra is the end of the beginning. All previous records served as stepping stones accumulating and shaping the band's course and leading them down an artistic and aesthetic path to this point. Umbra is more of a feeling than a concept; it is an energy. It is all the things we keep underneath or to ourselves. It is the cold feeling of internal conflict, the bargaining, and the wickedness that exists within a space otherwise covered in light. The sounds don't necessarily match the stories; the energy doesn't always match the intent. It's not about the light or the dark. It's about the light and the dark.

My thoughts: I'll keep this one short. This is an incredible record. Grayscale started playing with new sounds and instrumentation on their previous record but it made for a mishmash of songs that sounded like their old stuff, great songs that evolved the band and bad songs that they did too much with. That being said Grayscale clearly realized what worked on that album and ran with it here giving us an AOTY contender.

rationale. - If The Problem Persists

Label: Self-released

Press release: rationale. have revealed that they are releasing a new record, and it's dropping next week! 'If The Problem Persists' is set to drop digitally on September 24. It will be released on vinyl in early 2022 via Smartpunk Records. The Chicago trio consists of Joe Taylor (Knuckle Puck), Dan Lambton (Formerly of Real Friends) and Ryan Rumchaks (Knuckle Puck, Homesafe).

My thoughts: Those that did not feel the new Real Friends album gave them what they wanted (not sure why you'd feel that way but whatever) then behold rationale.'s new EP featuring Dan Lambton vocals. That being said this sounds more like early Real Friends then the strides they took on Composure which seen Dan write a lot for the first time. I had high hopes but it left me a little disappointed but still a worthy listen especially if you need to pick yourself back together (get it?).

Special: No Time To Die, Vacation Friends, Kate Mini-Reviews

No Time To Die:

Synopsis: In No Time To Die, Bond has left active service and is enjoying a tranquil life in Jamaica. His peace is short-lived when his old friend Felix Leiter from the CIA turns up asking for help. The mission to rescue a kidnapped scientist turns out to be far more treacherous than expected, leading Bond onto the trail of a mysterious villain armed with dangerous new technology.

My thoughts: Going in I wasn't sure if this would be Craig's last bond but I can now say with absolute certainty it will be. Daniel Craig looked bored most of the time, although his character didn't have much to be happy about he didn't have to look this out of tune the whole time. That being said this is at the very least a middling Craig Bond film as the other cast stepped it up as did the writing and the direction even though the Bond theme remained stagnant as it has been a while.

Final verdict: 3.5 Bond girls out of 5.

Vacation Friends:

Synopsis: In this raw and raunchy comedy, straight-laced Marcus and Emily (Lil Rel Howery, Yvonne Orji) are befriended by wild, thrill-seeking partiers Ron and Kyla (John Cena, Meredith Hagner) at a resort in Mexico. Living in the moment, the usually level-headed couple lets loose to enjoy a week of uninhibited fun and debauchery with their new "vacation friends." Months after their walk on the wild side, Marcus and Emily are horrified when Ron and Kyla show up uninvited at their wedding, creating chaos and proving that what happens on vacation, doesn't necessarily stay on vacation.

My thoughts: I'm pretty comfortable in naming this the best straight up comedy I've seen this year, though that list is short compared to past years and this film is not without flaws but the cast provides you enough chemistry and heart that you can pretty safely ignore the films other shortcomings.

Final verdict: 4 illegal drugs out of 5.

Kate:

Synopsis: Meticulous and preternaturally skilled, Kate is the perfect specimen of a finely tuned assassin at the height of her game. But when she uncharacteristically blows an assignment targeting a member of the yakuza in Tokyo, she quickly discovers she's been poisoned, a brutally slow execution that gives her less than 24 hours to exact revenge on her killers. As her body swiftly deteriorates, Kate forms an unlikely bond with the teenage daughter of one of her past victims. Starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Woody Harrelson, and directed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, Kate follows a burned assassin's furious pursuit of one last self-appointed job.

My thoughts:

Final verdict: 3.5 shots out of 5.

Special: First Listen Thoughts: Spiritbox "Eternal Blue", Real Friends "Torn In Two", 3OH!3 "Need"

Spiritbox - Eternal Blue

Label: Rise Records

Press release: Spiritbox have announced details of their highly-anticipated debut album Eternal Blue. The Canadian metal stars will be unleashing their new LP on September 17 via Rise Records, with vocalist Courtney LaPlante sharing, “We are very anxious to release our album, it is a body of work we have been accumulating for over two years. Having the recording process put on hold for so long due to the pandemic has made me see that I can never take the experience of tracking an album for granted ever again."

My thoughts: Although most songs were previously released as singles, Eternal Blue is an album that comes together better as a cohesive unit. An eyebrow was raised at the closing tandem of Circle With Me and Constance (both singles) but in the context of the album it works really well. Yellowjacket is quite likely the next Holy Roller. This is just the beginning of a huge career for the band and I'm excited to see what comes next.

Real Friends - Torn In Two

Label: Pure Noise Records

Press release: Real Friends have announced a new EP! Titled Torn In Two, the upcoming EP from Illinois-based pop-punk band features five new songs and five re-workings of said songs, and is scheduled to be released in September this year, via Pure Noise Records. This new EP incorporates a recurring motif of the torn-ness and separation we have recently experienced in our everyday lives, as vocalist Cody Muraro elaborates. “I really liked how we were able to incorporate the Torn In Two theme throughout. The album artwork being people separated. The five main songs on one side and five alternates on the other. I think the past year has left a lot of us feeling torn, scrambling to reconnect with a sense of familiarity.”

My thoughts: I'm not super upset about getting a 5 track EP with 2 versions of each song but I can't help but wonder if this would've worked better with a reimagined EP a few months down the road after we've had time to digest the new output more as all I could really think about after listening to the first half was how much better the actual versions of the songs were vs. the reimagined. It's a shame Spinning is buried in the tracklist as it may end up being my favourite on the record. New vocalist Cody sounds a lot crisper than Dan Lambton, something a lot of fans probably don't like but it works for me and the songwriting is still solid, Dan only really started writing on Composure, and although it's not nearly as good as Composure I like it as much (or more) as their previous releases.

3OH!3 - Need

Label: Photo Finish Records

Press release: Lockdown provided space for Sean Foreman and Nathan Motte to step back and “examine what it is that we do as 3OH!3 and why we do it,” and the result is a forthcoming album appropriately titled NEED, which will drop later this year. “As an artist, you’re never gonna rewrite your old stuff,” says Motte. “This new stuff that we're working on, we're excited about because we feel like it encapsulates all the good about 3OH!3 and that sense of collectivity, fun, and of a party.”

My thoughts: This is a party record front to back. Probably not a good idea to examine the lyrical content (Skid Marks is especially cringe) but I'm So Sad and Last Breath especially are bangers that may be some of the best the Colorado duo have ever released.
