Special: First Listen Thoughts: Hawthorne Heights "The Rain Just Follows Me", Andrew W.K. "God Is Partying", Homesafe "Nervous Reaction"

Hawthorne Heights - The Rain Just Follows Me

Label: Pure Noise Records

Press release: Hawthorne Heights have announced that their eighth album, the cheerily-titled The Rain Just Follows Me, will be released in September. The follow-up to 2018’s Bad Frequencies sees frontman TJ Woodruff going to lonely places, not because of the pandemic, but the distance between himself and his family while on tour. “The most unbelievable part of this story is that this entire album was written and recorded before the pandemic,” he says. “All of this darkness and turmoil is basically a summation of the coldest and loneliest nights I’ve tried to reconcile for the past 17 years.”

My thoughts: Hawthorne Heights previous offering was one of my favourites and I still listen to it regularly. I'm happy to report that The Rain Just Follows Me has the same vibes. Sad to say most people only listen to Hawthorne Heights first 2 records but they've been remarkably consistent (except maybe that EP era) at writing good songs with strong instrumentation and excellent melodies.

Andrew W.K. - God Is Partying

Label: Napalm Records

Press release: Hark, disciples of partying – the long wait is finally over! Napalm Records and ANDREW W.K. are thrilled to announce the impending release of the iconic Party God’s fifth full-length studio rock album, God Is Partying. The long-awaited nine-track opus of maximalist rock grandeur is set for release on September 10, 2021. Hovering in the fluorescent spotlight of his legendary party power, God Is Partying sees ANDREW W.K. ransack the corners of the human psyche, reaching a triumphant apex in his catalogue, 20 years after the release of his chart-topping 2001 full-length debut, I Get Wet. Emotive yet steadfast, ominous yet invigorating, God Is Partying embraces both the break-ups and break-downs of life, and ANDREW W.K. once again provides his audience with the perfect soundtrack to celebrate life in all its perplexing and euphoric intensity.

My thoughts: Andrew W.K. continues to be Mr. Positivity 20 years into his career and one might imagine they'll be even more positivity coming his way given his new relationship with MCU star and 2 Broke Girls alum Kat Dennings. His talent is undeniable as he does everything for each record from playing the instruments, to writing the lyrics, to producing. His co-creator simply handles the engineering and some of the mixing. That being said a lot of these songs didn't have me partying as much as I would have liked as the artist seems to of found an appreciation for goth ballads which drives most of the record.

Homesafe - Nervous Reaction

Label: Self-released

Press release: Chicago punks Homesafe will be self-releasing a new album, Nervous Reaction, this Friday (9/3). The band's earlier material channelled high-strung pop punk, but this new album takes their sound in a few new directions, embracing grungy alt-rock riffs, power pop hooks, and sunshiney Britpop harmonies.

My thoughts: If you like generic pop-punk, Homesafe is probably not the band for you. But the Chicago 3 piece, now unsigned, get to make the music they want without label pressure especially when your members other band (Knuckle Puck) is at the top of the modern pop-punk game. Homesafe has always been more of a "I love a few songs" types of bands for me rather than "I like this whole album" but Nervous Reaction may switch that for me. We'll need to see after a few more listens but the end of summer vibes this album gives me is undeniable.

Special: Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings, Candyman, Pixie Mini-Reviews

Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings:

Synopsis: Marvel Studios' "Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings" stars Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, who must confront the past he thought he left behind when he is drawn into the web of the mysterious Ten Rings organization. The film also stars Tony Leung as Wenwu, Awkwafina as Shang-Chi's friend Katy and Michelle Yeoh as Jiang Nan.

My thoughts: Saying I had low expectations for this film would probably be wrong but they were low by Marvel movie standards and all Shang-Chi did was completely destroy them to give us not only one of the best stand-alone Marvel movies in years but definitely in the running for best of 2021. The visuals were spectacular as you can tell they took their world creation inspiration from Black Panther but with an Oriental twist and the acting was top notch as the actors had a lot to play with given the strong script with loads of heart, humour and emotion as well as the typical real life issue angle which they went with Millennial careers and family structure which was not the obvious choice.

Final verdict: 5 sealed gates out of 5.

Candyman:

Synopsis: For as long as residents can remember, the housing projects of Chicago's Cabrini-Green neighborhood were terrorized by a word-of-mouth ghost story about a supernatural killer with a hook for a hand, easily summoned by those daring to repeat his name five times into a mirror. In present day, a decade after the last of the Cabrini towers were torn down, visual artist Anthony McCoy and his partner, gallery director Brianna Cartwright, move into a luxury loft condo in Cabrini, now gentrified beyond recognition and inhabited by upwardly mobile millennials. With Anthony's painting career on the brink of stalling, a chance encounter with a Cabrini-Green old-timer exposes Anthony to the tragically horrific nature of the true story behind Candyman. Anxious to maintain his status in the Chicago art world, Anthony begins to explore these macabre details in his studio as fresh grist for paintings, unknowingly opening a door to a complex past that unravels his own sanity and unleashes a terrifying wave of violence that puts him on a collision course with destiny.

My thoughts: I liked the angle they took with Candyman, not seeing the original I'm glad they built off it without leaving new viewers confused. The twist wasn't too much of a shocker but it had enough elements that I didn't see coming to be entertained and although horror isn't my preferred genre I wasn't upset I watched this even if the script could've drawn out more story instead of showing some random killings of characters we barely know.

Final verdict: 3.5 hook hands out of 5.

Pixie:

Synopsis: Pixie Hardy sets out to avenge her mother's death and attempts a heist that will give her the means to leave her small-town life behind. When the plan goes horribly wrong, she's forced to team up with a pair of misfits who are clearly in over their heads. On the run from a criminal gang of priests and nuns, the trio tries to scheme and swindle anyone they come across.

My thoughts: Pixie was just a little too weird for me. I'm not sure if British fare isn't for me, or it was just this movie in particular but Pixie sounded like something up my alley but this just didn't do it for me. Not to say this movie is all bad. The actors did well with what they were given, the cringe parts were meant to be that way and there was some genuine laughs I'm just not sure I'll ever revisit this flick.

Final verdict: 3 interrupted threesomes out of 5.

Special: First Listen Thoughts: With Confidence "With Confidence", Goody Grace "Don't Forget Where You Came From" NoFX "Single Album"

With Confidence - Self-Titled

Label: Hopeless Records

Press release: With Confidence new album will be self-titled and will be dropping on August 27 via Hopeless Records. The band had this to say about it: “For album 3, we are just excited for people to hear some new music from us," note the band. "It’ll be 3 years when this album finally lands. There’s nothing better than pulling back that curtain and letting everybody in….like opening a new section of our own amusement park. We recorded it all here at home in Australia with our friend Stevie Knight who we worked on ‘Better Weather’ with. There’ll be new sounds, new rides, new appetites and hopefully, sometime soon, you’ll be standing in line to see a show. Love all day, love all the way etc, etc.”

My thoughts: I was very excited for this album, we've seen many pop-punk bands refine their sounds recently to great success (Seaway, Neck Deep and Grayscale jump to mind) and based on the 4 pre-release singles we got it seemed that would also be the case. I was lukewarm on Cult and Paper though the latter I've come around on a bit. Big Cat and Anything were certified bops however, unfortunately there's only one other bop to be found in the opening track. The self-titled album is pretty uneven here, and although I wouldn't normally come back to it I feel I owe With Con based on the fact that their other full lengths are amazing records I still love I have to see if this album is a grower.

Goody Grace - Don't Forget Where You Came From

Label: Atlantic Records

Press release: Acclaimed singer-songwriter-producer Goody Grace has dropped his first full-length project, Don’t Forget Where You Came From, available now via Atlantic Records. Inspired by his youth growing up in the remote town of Selkirk, Manitoba, Don’t Forget Where You Came From is an amalgamation of nostalgia, foresight and the rock, punk, alternative and hip-hop artists that have influenced Goody’s life.

My thoughts: This album is basically a collection of singles. In the new space artists seem to release a single every few months which is what Goody did and then he released an "album" with all those singles and a couple new tracks. Unfortunately I had been mixed on the singles and the deep cuts fall into rap territory more often than not and I was not there for that. I'm just gonna stick with the singles I liked from this release.

NoFX - Single Album

Label: Fat Wreck Chords

Press release: NOFX have announced a new album called ‘Single Album’. The Los Angeles outfit’s fourteenth studio effort will arrive via Fat Mike’s label Fat Wreck Chords on February 26, following on from 2016’s ‘First Ditch Effort’. ‘Single Album’ was originally set to be a double record, but the coronavirus pandemic changed NOFX’s plans. “When you write a double album, you write differently,” Mike said. “I was writing really different songs, and some fun songs, but you have to make a double album interesting enough to listen to the whole way. “I wanted to make a perfect double album, and I didn’t accomplish that. So I decided to just make a single album, hence the title.”

My thoughts: You will never hear me argue that Fat Mike is not a lyrical genius. That being said apart from the lyrics there is not a ton here for me. Linewleum was a solid first single but I didn't get behind Fuck Euphemism which is why it took me so long to get to this album . I Love You More Than I Hate You is probably the best song on this album with all the others going tonally all over the place with some songs starting off with me thinking "wow this is really good" before turning into something else that I don't buy in as much for or just being too weird. I was never the biggest NoFX fan, rather than enjoying everything they put out it tends to be more select songs I get behind. If your mind is made up one way or another on this band, Single Album isn't likely to change it but if you're a fan you'll enjoy this release.
