Greyhound:
Synopsis: In the early days of WWII, an international convoy of 37 Allied ships, led by captain Ernest Krause (Hanks) in his first command of a U.S. destroyer, crosses the treacherous North Atlantic while hotly pursued by wolf packs of Nazi U-boats.
My thoughts: A fast paced war movie? (Insert Allan Parish "What Year Is It" meme). Greyhound makes the most of it's 90 minutes keeping the script and pacing tight for an emotional and action driven ride considering it's a movie about boats running away from submarines. There are some annoyances, sure. Tom Hanks is great and the nicest guy in the world but at the same time how many times can he play the same character? The supporting cast is also nothing to write home about but as far as a direct streaming service movie goes you can do much worse.
Final verdict: 3 torpedo diversions out of 5.
Artemis Fowl:
Synopsis: Based on the first two books in author Eoin Colfer wildly popular children's fantasy series, Walt Disney Studios' Artemis Fowl tells the story of adolescent criminal genius Artemis, who captures a vicious fairy, and attempts to harness her magical powers in a bid to rescue his family.
My thoughts: Let's start with the good, the visuals are stunning and as far as not knowing the source material, which I don't, I had no problems with the story itself. That being said the acting was not strong, neither by the kids or the known commodities as even Josh Gad came off as "try hard". The storytelling itself was all over the place and the movie didn't seem to know what tone it wanted to take from scene to scene. Chaotic and frantic over 90 minutes is not the way to make a film, but it's hardly the giant sticker everyone makes it out to be as at least it spent it's 140 million on special effects and didn't just phone it in.
Final verdict: 2 fairies out of 5.
Extraction:
Synopsis: Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth) is a fearless black market mercenary with nothing left to lose when his skills are solicited to rescue the kidnapped son of an imprisoned international crime lord. But in the murky underworld of weapons dealers and drug traffickers, an already deadly mission approaches the impossible, forever altering the lives of Rake and the boy.
My thoughts: I'd like to simply tell you that this Netflix original is simply a good popcorn flick but it's much more than that. It's got some incredible action sequences (including some long ones that are sure to delight action fans). It's also got thrilling, comedic and the rare emotional element in it as well. It's not a stretch to say this is one of, if not, the best film Netflix has put out this calendar year thus far.
Final verdict: 4 mercenaries out of 5.

Special: Ranking Grayscale's "Adornment"
As of Today's writing (July 15th), Grayscale just announced a new EP of reworked tunes coming at the end of the month so I figured now is as good of time as any to look back at Grayscale's Fearless Records debut album "Adornment".
11. Slept
Slept is the penultimate track off of Adornment but it ranks at the bottom of my ranking. This is the 2nd time the 2nd to last track ends up at the bottom of one of my rankings but unlike the previous time (Waterparks - Crybaby) this is not a bad song, just the worst on Adornment.
10. Atlantic
Bring on the hate! Atlantic is Grayscale's most popular song and was the lead single on this album and it also introduced me to the band, unfortunately it has not aged well and I'm thankful I bought the album on a whim as some deep cuts ended up being my favourites.
9. Fever Dream
Yet another single and fan favourite ends up near the bottom as this is their 2nd most played song off Adornment (after Atlantic) it's dark tones are fine but other songs on the album do it better although the creepy music video that accompanied this song was stellar.
8. Slipping Away
Despite being at #3 in the tracklisting, joined by singles and fan faves within the first 5 tracks, Slipping Away is often forgotten which is sad cause it really is a good song but much like Fever Dream above, other songs channel the pop punk darkness better.
7. Come Undone
I'll be the first to admit the juxtaposition of Patty Walters (As It Is) vocals with lead singer Collin Walsh seem like an odd fit but it works well together. Fearless Records had both of their bands on their roster so it made sense at the time however Grayscale's popularity has since soared.
6. Echoes (Carry On)
We've made it to the midpoint of our list with a song the band loves but seldom plays (only Come Undone and Slept have been played less according to Setlist.fm. However they did play it on their last run of shows so maybe it'll end up in the mix some more going forward.
5. If I Ever See You Again
The last song on the record, the last of 5 music videos to be made for the album, If I Ever See You Again deserves a spot in the front half of this ranking. It's loud chorus and gang vocals make you want to scream along in celebration of getting over a bad relationship.
4. Forever Yours
A romantic sounding song that is anything but, Forever Yours was the 3rd single released and ranks the highest out of the 5 on this ranking. It has recently passed Atlantic as their most streamed song on Spotify and it's just a matter of time before it supplants Atlantic as the set closer.
3. Mum
The most punk sounding song lands in the top 3 though ironically this is also one of the most polished sounding songs on the record. Mum deals with a difficult subject, a parent's fight with drug abuse which hits close to home for myself.
2. Beautiful Things
Speaking of songs dealing with difficult subject matter, Beautiful Things deals with mental health issues such as depression and the suicidal thoughts that come with it. I have no idea if this song was written about Collin's cousin Tommy who tragically took his own life but one would think he'd like the opportunity to play this to his cousin once more regardless.
1. Let It Rain
Track One: Let It Rain. You'll be hard pressed to find a better album opener than this, though Grayscale has a tendency for starting off albums with straight up heat so if this is bested it might be by their own hand. It's about wanting a fresh start and encompasses the album's tone in one bop.

Special: Da 5 Bloods, Fantasy Island, Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made Mini-Reviews
Da 5 Bloods:
Synopsis: From Academy Award Winner Spike Lee comes a New Joint: the story of four African-American Vets -- Paul (Delroy Lindo), Otis (Clarke Peters), Eddie (Norm Lewis), and Melvin (Isiah Whitlock, Jr.) -- who return to Vietnam. Searching for the remains of their fallen Squad Leader (Chadwick Boseman) and the promise of buried treasure, our heroes, joined by Paul's concerned son (Jonathan Majors), battle forces of Man and Nature -- while confronted by the lasting ravages of The Immorality of The Vietnam War.
My thoughts: Delroy Lindo puts on a tour de force acting clinic in this Spike Lee joint. Lee is continuing his hot streak proving he's left Oldboy well in the past. The world may not have known a few months ago that we needed this movie but Lee certainly did. It runs longer than it needed to be and was slightly uneven but that can also be said about war itself.
Final verdict: 4 gold bars out of 5.
Fantasy Island:
Synopsis: In Blumhouse's new spin on Fantasy Island, the enigmatic Mr. Roarke makes the secret dreams of his lucky guests come true at a luxurious but remote tropical resort. But when the fantasies turn into nightmares, the guests have to solve the island's mystery in order to escape with their lives.
My thoughts: I watched the unrated cut so I can't speak to people's complaints about the film being toned down. I will say that given the Blumhouse advert and the name dropping of Halloween and Get Out you expect horror. And yes I know they only do horror's but it's their bread and butter. That being said this is an action thriller with some gore elements (reminded me of the Death Wish remake). The twists kept it interesting when the characters could not (despite me generally enjoying the majority of the actors). It's certainly no 7% movie, but it's not a must watch either.
Final verdict: 3 fantasies out of 5.
Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made:
Synopsis: Based on the best-selling book, "Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made" follows the hilarious exploits of Timmy Failure, a quirky, deadpan 5th grader from Portland who, along with a 1,500-pound polar bear named Total, operates Total Failure Inc., a detective agency. Somewhat of an outsider at his elementary school, Timmy is clueless but confident and wants to see his detective agency become the best in the world. But first he must navigate the world of adults around him, including his overburdened mother Patty, her well-meaning boyfriend Crispin, his teacher and nemesis Mr. Crocus, and Mr. Jenkins, a school-mandated guidance counselor, and figure out what it means to be normal when you know deep down inside you're different.
My thoughts: Tom McCarthy followed up an Oscar winning film with a Disney+ original kids movie, but a good one at that. Timmy Failure is charming and filled with a number of quirky jokes. That being said they could've done more with the plot to avoid falling into mundane territory.
Final verdict: 3.5 Segways out of 5.

Special: First Listen Thoughts: Run The Jewels "RTJ4", Hayley Williams "Petals For Armor", Butch Walker "American Love Story"
Run The Jewels - RTJ4
Label: Jewel Runners/BMG
Press release: Run the Jewels will release their fourth LP, RTJ4, on June 5 via Jewel Runners/BMG. The 11-track album runs over 40 minutes and features a number of heavy-hitters, including Pharrell Williams, Josh Homme Mavis Staples, 2 Chainz, Zack de la Rocha and more. RTJ4, which took two years to complete, was primarily recorded at Rick Rubin’s Shangri-La Studios in Malibu, California and Electric Lady Studios in New York City.
My thoughts: This album is straight heat. Walking In The Snow, A Few Words, Yankee and Ju$t are among the many highlights. This is probably the best Killer Mike has ever been and the guest spots are also as good as they've ever been. Pulling The Pin and Holy Calamafuck are the lowlights but even those are not bad by any stretch. This is head and shoulders above RTJ3 at first glance.
Hayley Williams - Petals For Armor
Label: Atlantic Records
Press release: Hayley Williams has announced the release date and title of her new solo music. Petals for Armor is coming out January 22. Taking to her social media pages, Hayley explained: "30 was a very important year. 31 will be too. I'm putting out some music next year. With the help of some of my closest friends, I made something I'm going to call my own."
My thoughts: It's no surprise that I wasn't really a fan of this LP as I grew up on Paramore which uh didn't sound like this. I wasn't even a huge After Laughter fan. That being said if Hayley sticks to this for her solo stuff and we get more early Paramore era music then I'm on board. Petals For Armor is full of heavy synths and dark lyrics which Hayley clearly had to get off her chest after dealing with a failed marriage and the regular mental health issues she deals with on a regular basis. I truly hope Hayley is in a better place and we get some new Paramore bops out of this.
Butch Walker - American Love Story
Label: Ruby Red Records
Press release: Walker describes American Love Story, which drops on May 8th (Preview to order) as “a love story about hate” and a project meant to be listened to from start to finish. “It’s not just a record of a collection of songs under a theme, it actually talks and builds and tells a story and has a pretty bittersweet ending,” Walker reveals. The album was a surprise, even to him. “I had not planned on doing a rock opera at all. I don’t know if anybody has told you but they’re certainly not in fashion,” he says, with a laugh.
My thoughts: Butch Walker obviously was hurt by the status of the world while writing this album. It touches on everything from racism, homophobia and gun control as he weaves his story. I liked the more pop soundier songs the bets with Gridlock being far and away the best on this record but this is a story that needed to be told.
