Special: Top 10 Active Canadian Bands

Well hello everybody! Here in Canada we celebrate the birth of our nation with Canada Day on this coming Tuesday. So I thought what better way to celebrate then to do a Top 10 of my favourite Canadian bands that are still kicking. The requirements are as follows:

  • Must be active (no hiatus, not broken-up, pretty self-explanatory)
  • Must have a Wikipedia page, I know this sounds weird but I listen to a lot of relatively unknown and local music but I wanted these bands to be readily accessible, hell I may do a Top 10 Canadian Bands you never heard of list and the requirement will be can not have a Wikipedia page.
  • Must state band formed in Canada, didn't include bands that have Canadian members but are listed as from the US (i.e. Paramore, Relient K, The Swellers, etc.)
  • Band must be actively touring in support of new music, I did not include bands that are listed as active but haven't released any music for several years (Brighter, Brightest, Our Lady Peace, These Kids Wear Crowns, etc.)
On with the countdown!

10. Faber Drive

Faber Drive is a four-piece Juno Award-nominated Canadian rock band from Mission, British Columbia. They have released 3 full lengths and 1 EP. They have 2 platinum singles in Canada (G-G-Get Up And Dance and Give Him Up) and 2 gold singles in Canada (Tongue Tied and When I'm With You)

9. The Flatliners

The Flatliners are a punk rock band from Richmond Hill and Brampton, Ontario, Canada.[1] Since their formation in 2002, The Flatliners have been a growing influence in the Toronto punk/ska movement as well as other areas of the Greater Toronto Area. They are currently signed to Fat Wreck Chords[2] and Stomp Records (Canada). As well, they won the inaugural, annual "Best Band Ever" award given by the Edmonton Vinyl Blog DigitalIsDead. The small publication has also named their third LP, "Cavalcade" the front runner for their annual "Record Of The Year" award for 2010. Their album Dead Language was nominated for a 2014 Juno Award in the category of Metal/Hard Music Album of the Year.

8. The New Cities

The New Cities is a Juno Award and ADISQ Award nominated band originating from Trois-Rivières, Quebec and currently based in Montreal, Quebec. They've released a number of top charting singles in Canada including "Dead End Countdown" and "Heatwave" they've become the number 1 party band in Canada and the world is starting to take notice as they've spent the majority of this past year touring Europe.

7. Cancer Bats

Cancer Bats are a hardcore punk band from Toronto, Canada. They have released four studio albums and six extended plays. Cancer Bats take a wide variety of influences from heavy metal sub-genres and fuse them into hardcore punk and punk rock, and include elements of sludge metal, and southern rock. The band has also been compared to metalcore bands of the 1990s like Converge and Hatebreed.

6. Hedley

Hedley is a Canadian Pop-Rock band from Vancouver, British Columbia. Their discography comprises five studio albums: Hedley, Famous Last Words, The Show Must Go, Storms and Wild Life, one live album, Go With the Show and twenty-one singles with sixteen made into music videos including #1 single "On My Own" and 3x Platinum single "Kiss You Inside Out". Every studio album Hedley released went at least platinum in Canada including 2009's The Show Must Go On and 2005's Self-Titled going double platinum.

5. Arkells

Arkells are a Canadian rock band, formed in Hamilton, Ontario that have been making waves in the Canadian indie scene for years. The former Juno winning Group Of The Year (2012) are preparing to release their third full length this summer, the much anticipated follow up to 2011's Michigan Left and if lead single "Come To Light" is any indication we're in for a treat.

4. Simple Plan

There's no denying Simple Plan's heyday was over a decade ago. But the French-Canadian rock band from Montreal, Quebec are still selling platinum records world wide after they bust onto the scene in a big way with 2002's No Pads, No Helmets... Just Balls and 2004 follow-up Still Not Getting Any with Successful singles from most recent studio album Get Your Heart On "Jet Lag" and "Summer Paradise"

3. illScarlett

The boys from Mississauga Ontario's sound can be defined as pop infused rock reggae. They have made a name for themselves in the Canadian music scene and are making their name known throughout the United States and around the world. Their most prominent influence is California-based band Sublime. IllScarlett has four major studio albums: ILLP, Clearly in Another Fine Mess, All Day With It (Gold status in Canada), and 1UP! As well as a handful of successful EP's.

2. Marianas Trench

Probably the most nominated band on this list, Marianas Trench is a Canadian rock band from Vancouver, British Columbia, formed in 2001. The band has released three full length studio albums, the most recent titled Ever After, released on November 21, 2011, along with 2009's Masterpiece Theatre and 2006's Fix Me. Their third and latest album Ever After was nominated for a Juno Award along with a huge number of MuchMusic Video Awards and various others.

1. Silverstein

Silverstein will always have a special place in my heart, and in all of Canada, usually overlooked when it comes to Canadian bands, Silverstein, a post-hardcore band from Burlington, Ontario, which formed in 2000, have released a total of seven studio albums, three EPs, a compilation album and a live DVD/CD. More importantly they don't just do well in Canada as they've had six albums peak in the top 12 on Billboards Independent Album Charts including 2013's hit concept album This Is How The Wind Shifts.
