Trolls: World Tour:
Synopsis: In an adventure that will take them well beyond what they've known before, Poppy (Kendrick) and Branch (Timberlake) discover that they are but one of six different Troll tribes scattered over six different lands and devoted to six different kinds of music: Funk, Country, Techno, Classical, Pop and Rock. Their world is about to get a lot bigger and a whole lot louder. A member of hard-rock royalty, Queen Barb (Rachel Bloom), aided by her father King Thrash (Ozzy Osbourne), wants to destroy all other kinds of music to let rock reign supreme. With the fate of the world at stake, Poppy and Branch, along with their friends set out to visit all the other lands to unify the Trolls in harmony against Barb, who's looking to upstage them all.
My thoughts: This was certainly a step back from the original which I did not see coming given the addition of rock music. It was not a bad movie by any stretch it just was a disappointment given the opportunity it had to improve on the originals 3.5 rating.
Final verdict: 3 musical strings out of 5.
Spenser Confidential:
Synopsis: Spenser (Mark Wahlberg) -- an ex-cop better known for making trouble than solving it -- just got out of prison and is leaving Boston for good. But first he gets roped into helping his old boxing coach and mentor, Henry (Alan Arkin), with a promising amateur. That's Hawk (Winston Duke), a brash, no-nonsense MMA fighter convinced he'll be a tougher opponent than Spenser ever was. When two of Spenser's former colleagues turn up murdered, he recruits Hawk and his foul-mouthed ex-girlfriend, Cissy (Iliza Shlesinger), to help him investigate and bring the culprits to justice.
My thoughts: This is the 5th straight movie in which director Peter Berg has made starring Mark Wahlberg. I haven't gotten around to most of those since Battleship soured me on him but Winston Duke was enough to get me interested and it was... Fine. Nothing spectacular but it's the best thing Netflix has done since Point Blank.
Final verdict: 3.5 Post Malone acting credits out of 5.
The Hunt:
Synopsis: Twelve strangers wake up in a clearing. They don't know where they are, or how they got there. They don't know they've been chosen... for a very specific purpose... The Hunt. In the shadow of a dark internet conspiracy theory, a group of globalist elites gathers for the very first time at a remote Manor House to hunt humans for sport. But the elites' master plan is about to be derailed because one of the hunted, Crystal (Betty Gilpin), knows The Hunters' game better than they do. She turns the tables on the killers, picking them off, one by one, as she makes her way toward the mysterious woman at the center of it all.
My thoughts: Half action, half thriller. The Hunt was entertaining enough although it could've still been improved. It didn't seem to know what it wanted to say, was it anti-rich? anti-south? Hollywood-adjacent? I think clarifying the tone would go a big way towards pushing this rating up but hey, bonus points for making Trump hate it.
Final verdict: 3.5 dressed pigs out of 5.

Special: First Listen Thoughts: Four Year Strong "Brain Pain", Body Count "Carnivore", Derek Sanders "My Rock And Roll Heart"
Four Year Strong - Brain Pain
Label: Pure Noise Records
Press Release: Four Year Strong have finally announced their highly anticipated fifth full-length album Brain Pain will be released on February 28 via Pure Noise Records. This will be the band’s first album since their self-titled release in 2015 and soon, fans will learn that it was worth every second of waiting.
My thoughts: A lot of pop punk bands are ditching the traditional sound of pop punk for a sound infused with late 90's alternative music as seen recently by bands like Seaway, Roam and Bearings. You can now add Four Year Strong to that list but they keep it heavy on Brain Pain which makes this a strong listen even though you're never quite sure what you will get from track to track.
Body Count - Carnivore
Label: Century Media Records
Press Release: The originators of Rap Metal are back. ICE-T and his band are as angry as ever on their 7th studio album, titled “CARNIVORE”, which coincides with their 30th anniversary as a band! 'Carnivore,' the band’s second album for Century Media, pairing ICE-T’s angry and socio-critical lyrics with thick guitar riffs and nods to metal and hardcore greats like Slayer, Metallica, Pantera, Suicidal Tendencies and Rage Against The Machine.
My thoughts: There are way more hits than misses here but the strongest tracks are the ones that lean hardcore like the title track Carnivore and Thee Critical Beatdown. The biggest miss is the features as Jasta comes off as a bad hype man and Lee's cringy chorus in her feature completely overshadows Ice's great verses.
Derek Sanders - My Rock And Roll Heart
Label: Rise Records
Press Release: Derek Sanders, the frontman of beloved Tallahassee emo/alternative band, Mayday Parade, has announced the release of his first solo EP, My Rock and Roll Heart, out on Friday, February 14 via Rise Records. Comprised of five stripped-back covers of tracks from Jimmy Eat World, Something Corporate, Saves The Day, The Juliana Theory, and local Tallahassee band Goodbye Love, the acoustic EP acts as a snapshot of songs that inspired Sanders to become a musician.
My thoughts: If you like acoustic Mayday Parade, you'll like this. Derek simply plays these covers on an guitar and croons through them all effortlessly. Although as a fan of most the original recordings I probably won't come back to those however knowing the backstory behind lead single "But Lauren" makes that song all that much more enjoyable.

Special: Sonic The Hedgehog, Coffee & Kareem, The Invisible Man Mini-Reviews
Sonic The Hedgehog:
Synopsis: SONIC THE HEDGEHOG is a live-action adventure comedy based on the global blockbuster video game franchise from Sega that centers on the infamously brash bright blue hedgehog. The film follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound -- human -- best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination. The film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.
My thoughts: Although a step down from last summers Detective Pikachu, Sonic is a huge win especially after the backlash from the original trailer. Baby Sonic is the most 2020 thing to happen so far this year and I loved every minute of it and I'm always on board when Jim Carrey is given the reigns to just go nuts. I'm glad this movie made some money before COVID-19 as it sets up for sequels and hopefully more goodness is to come.
Final verdict: 4.5 gold rings out of 5.
Coffee & Kareem:
Synopsis: While police officer James Coffee (Ed Helms) enjoys his new relationship with Vanessa Manning (Taraji P. Henson), her beloved 12-year-old son Kareem (Terrence Little Gardenhigh) plots their break-up. Attempting to scare away his mom's boyfriend for good, Kareem tries to hire criminal fugitives to take him out but accidentally exposes a secret network of criminal activity, making his family its latest target. To protect Vanessa, Kareem teams up with Coffee - the partner he never wanted - for a dangerous chase across Detroit.
My thoughts: Netflix latest original is here to get us through COVID-19 and it's fine but it's nothing special. It's classic adult humour in a fish out of water story with some action sprinkled it. It doesn't do any one thing great which holds it back and Henson is wasted as a juggernaut actress. Definitely worth a watch to kill an hour and a half but probably won't revisit it.
Final verdict: 3 foul-mouthed 12 year olds out of 5.
The Invisible Man:
Synopsis: Trapped in a violent, controlling relationship with a wealthy and brilliant scientist, Cecilia Kass (Moss) escapes in the dead of night and disappears into hiding, aided by her sister (Harriet Dyer, NBC's The InBetween), their childhood friend (Aldis Hodge, Straight Outta Compton) and his teenage daughter (Storm Reid, HBO's Euphoria). But when Cecilia's abusive ex (Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Netflix's The Haunting of Hill House) commits suicide and leaves her a generous portion of his vast fortune, Cecilia suspects his death was a hoax. As a series of eerie coincidences turns lethal, threatening the lives of those she loves, Cecilia's sanity begins to unravel as she desperately tries to prove that she is being hunted by someone nobody can see.
My thoughts: As far as Universal Monster remakes go this is head and shoulders above The Mummy and Dracula Untold but it still has it's issues. The running time is longer than it needs to be and they leave too many hanging threads early on which takes focus away from what's happening on screen. Moss is a fantastic actress but she's not able to elevate this movie much.
Final verdict: 3.5 tech upgrades out of 5.

Special: First Listen Thoughts: Anti-Flag "20/20 Vision", Handguns "When The Light Burns Out" and Echosmith "Lonely Generation"
Before we get to the first non TV show or best of Special since December we have to crown the winner of the TV Show bracket... Drum roll please... Lucifer fought valiantly but in the end it was Suits picking up the W by a handful of votes. Join us next March when Lucifer will look for that elusive win after being 2nd place 2 years in a row.
Anti-Flag - 20/20 Vision
Label: Spinefarm Records
Press Release: With 20/20 Vision the Pittsburgh, PA based band prove that they have plenty of vitriol left, aiming to face the challenges of our chaotic socio-political time head on. Opener “Hate Conquers All” pulls no punches, immediately drawing a line in the sand against the fascistic hate mongering of the Trump administration and making it clear that 20/20 Vision is an album intended to explicitly address the here and now.
My thoughts: Anti-Flag has been at it for 20+ years of protest songs yet they've never actually attacked a president outright but that changes with 20/20 Vision and more specifically Donald Trump in case you missed the artwork. It's an album full of songs about being pissed off but with an optimistic tone that we can make change. The album definitely needs more listens before I can declare it's better than it's predecessor (American Fall) but it's definitely got a shot after one listen.
Handguns - When The Light Burns Out
Label: Self-Released
Press Release: When The Light Burns Out is the fourth LP from Rigatoni Island pop-punk band Handguns and was released on January 1st 2020 at midnight. For this album, the line up from their first 2 EP's Don't Bite Your Tongue and Anywhere but Home were returning to record this album.
My thoughts: For a self-released album this record sounds similar to past label releases from the band so they definitely put the time, effort and money into production. Not their best effort but can certainly come close after more listens as the bones for a memorable pop punk record even if there are a few misses on first listen, something you don't normally want to determine on a first listen but songs like "Liquid Therapy" make that happen but thankfully songs like "Cap Peeler" and "Glass Lanterns" overpower those misses.
Echosmith - Lonely Generation
Label: Self-Released
Press Release: The sibling trio -- comprised of Sydney, Noah and Graham Sierota -- announced their sophomore LP Lonely Generation will be released Jan. 10. It will be the band’s first release under their new Echosmith Music record label, which was founded in 2018 with Warner Music’s Alternative Distribution Alliance.
My thoughts: Blending soft female pop vocals with indie rock melodies generally works but Echosmith makes it work better than most. I was worried with them deciding to self-release their sophmore album, especially nearly 7 years after their debut but they made it work. Only time will tell if Echosmith will return to an upward trajectory or if this is simply the beginning of the end for the band but if you enjoy pop-rock music with a good amount of slow jams mixed in you won't be disappointing with this release.
